Taylor Electric Company – History

From 1922 Taylor Electric Company has been "A Name You Can Trust" in Chicago.  Founded by Sam Taylor, at a time when it wasn't necessary to sign a contract to do electrical work, Taylor Electric performed light industrial and residential work on the south and west sides of Chicago.  Sam Taylor's philosophy-- that a man's word is his bond, and that only a company that performed quality work would survive-- proved the test of time.  Today, Taylor Electric, the oldest African American owned and operated construction firm in Chicago, is a multi-million dollar corporation performing work throughout Cook County

In 1958 Sam's son, Rufus Taylor, became active in the company, starting as an apprentice working with the tools, working under his father’s mentorship transitioned into managing the company in 1969.  Under Rufus' direction Taylor Electric flourished.  Rufus, following the family tradition of quality and integrity, worked to promote company activity through community and industry involvement.  Rufus served on the Board of Directors of the Electric Association of Chicago, Hull House, and the Lawndale Local Development Corporation, to name just a few. Rufus, like Sam, was a tireless promoter of Minorities and Women in the construction industry. He worked closely with Federation of Women Contractors (FWC) and was a founding and sustaining member of Black Contractors United, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for several years.

Since 1995, the third generation of management at Taylor Electric has been the team effort of Martha Taylor, President/Chief Executive Officer and Kenneth "Kenny" Dinkins, Vice President/Chief Operations Officer.

Martha and Kenny proudly carry the torch of their founder’s legacy into the new millennium, working to excel in the tradition of Sam and Rufus Taylor.  Quality and integrity are much more than buzzwords--they are the foundation of Taylor Electric’s success, a continued philosophy of both company and family, incorporated into every aspect of the business.  Taylor Electric is very proud of its heritage, and continuously strives to maintain and further its excellent reputation in the construction industry.
